Tyrel Johnson builds stories in three dimensions. Gravity is his only obstacle. His work is expressed in the octaves of a growing array of materials. Yet, there is a cohesive fingerprint upon each work. He intentionally places artistic challenges in front of himself to force evolution and fuel expression. The failures become research. The successes live in the homes and offices of his collectors. Materials and form are a substrate for a deep inquiry shaped by the insatiable curiosity that is his inner world. What was thought becomes tactile food for the eyes. Art that converses. Steeped in art since birth in the kiln of a family foundry; he always knew what he wanted to be when he grew up. By adulthood, he had already helped bring many monumental works into existence through the lost wax process. Years in high-end construction followed, where precision, structure, and restraint were forged in mud, snow, wind, and sun. A pivotal sculpture, “Continuance of Action”, is symbolic of those years of wearing a toolbelt.
